Frank Ski Clears Hurdle with NPU-C

V-103 radio personality hopes to open restaurant doors before year's end

Citing support from the Peachtree Battle Alliance and Collier Hills North, NPU-C chairman Paul Melvin stated that he would recommend approval of Frank Rodriguez’s application for a new restaurant at 2110 Peachtree Road, after receiving no opposition at last night’s meeting.

Rodriguez, who is known to Atlantans as Frank Ski, the popular morning radio host on V-103, gave a brief presentation at the meeting. He was accompanied by James Johnson, who will serve as general manager for the restaurant, to be called "Frank Ski’s Restaurant and Bar."  In his presentation, Ski indicated that the new establishment will serve “classic American” food, similar to Houston’s menu. Johnson was previously a manager at Houston’s, working at several of the restaurant chain's Atlanta locations over the past six years.

In his remarks, Melvin noted that there was not a quorum present for the meeting, so the NPU could not vote on formal approval of the application. He stated his intention to recommend approval to the city, however, based on the fact that Ski had received the support of the two neighborhood associations, and no one had come forward with any opposition to the application. The general comments among those in attendance suggested that the restaurant would be a welcome addition to the area.

Other items on the agenda Tuesday night included John Scarminech’s application for change of ownership for Stooges Restaurant at 2020 Howell Mill Road, and David Ogram’s request for a variance at 1930 Greystone Road in order to construct a 2-story detached garage. Both items were postponed until the NPU’s next meeting, at the applicants’ request.

Zone 2 community prosecutor Hannah Chung noted that the district attorney’s office is embarking on a new program to address the growing problem with theft of copper parts from outdoor AC units. Her office is looking for volunteers (both residential and commercial property owners) to participate in the program, which would involve coating the copper parts with a special paint to allow for identification and tracking.

The final item on the agenda involved a presentation by Vanessa Turner, who is planning an outdoor festival in the Bennett Street Design District for September 24-25. The event is called “Living Health Happy & Green.” More information on the festival will be made available in the coming weeks.
