Pace, Galloway and Atlanta International School would be eligble for separate 16-team sports championship brackets under action taken by the Georgia High School Association Tuesday.
As reported in The Atlanta Journal-Consititution, rural public schools unhappy about competing against urban private schools in Class A prevailed upon the GHSA to set up the separate champsionships, beginning next year.
Out of the Buckhead schools, Pace is the only one that competes in football, but Galloway and AIS would apparently be subject to the new rules in basketball, soccer, cross country and other sports.
Meanwhile, the GHSA also approved new region lineups for next school year.
North Atlanta will move up to class AAAAA, competing in the region 6-AAAAA-A subregion against traditional state powers such as Tucker, Dunwoody and Stephenenson. The region's other subregion includes Mays, Southwest DeKalb and M.L. King.
A big change will take place in Region 6-AA with the departure of longtime dominant power Buford to Class AAA. Now, Westminster and Lovett will be in a five-school region 6-AA, competing against Wesleyan, GAC and Hapeville Charter. After years of including Atlanta public schools, the region will not be subdivided as in the past and will consist solely of private schools.
Galloway, Pace and AIS will compete in a 5-A subregion.
