How Safe Do You Feel in Buckhead?
Crime rose about 8 percent overall in Atlanta Police's Zone 2, which includes Buckhead.
Just a couple weeks ago, two patrons of the Northside Library were carjacked at gunpoint. In December, Zone 2 Commander Major Van Hobbs said the Buckhead area was seeing an “uptick in crime” due to increased car break-ins and home burglaries. Not even a month ago, men in ski masks with guns robbed two women after their Bible study dinner at Houston’s restaurant at West Paces Ferry and Northside Parkway.
At last week’s Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods meeting, Atlanta Police Major Van Hobbs said more blue lights will be seen in Buckhead’s Zone 2 this year.
The increase is due to the 27 percent increase in thefts from autos in Zone 2. A recent report showed that over a 30-day period, people who live outside of Buckhead reported more than three-quarters of all the thefts from autos in Zone 2.
An article in the Buckhead Reporter notes that Zone 2 was the only of the Atlanta Police Department’s six zones to see an overall increase in crime in 2012. The other five zones, except Zone 6, which saw no change in overall crime rates, had a decrease in overall crime rates.
Hobbs said he doesn’t have data to analyze if the zone’s jump in overall crime could be attributed to the zone’s recent addition of three square miles near Cheshire Bridge Road, formerly in Zone 6.
He said it could be a factor, however.
Zone 2 saw a 5 percent decrease in overall crime in 2010, an even bigger decrease of about 12 percent in 2011 before the portion of Zone 6 was added in late 2011.

Actually, Ive noticed more cop cars (particularly the GSP), running around Buckhead on Thurs. & Sat. nites looking for possible DUIers...while that is certainly admirable,why dont u put more of an effort into getting the REAL CRIMINALS (i.e. THUGZ) off of our streets???

Since Major Hobbs said this about more "blue lights" at the BCN meeting, I've seen a lot more police cars with their lights on at various places on Peachtree Road. I don't know if I've just noticed them more now or if it's because there really has been an increase that quickly.

I stay away from Lennox square due to all the ghetto trash. Macy's is the filthiest store I've ever been in. I guess the owners just gave up on it.

I live in Buckhead with my family and feel no less unsafe here than I have anywhere else I have lived. Crime is a part of society and people are robbed, assaulted, and murdered in all cities and suburbs. I go to Lenox and Phipps weekly (mostly during the day as I'm a stay at home mom) and in now way feel that it's "ghetto trash." Unfortunately, most crimes are random and people are a victim of circumstance of the wrong place at the wrong time...or their house seemed the easiest to break in to.

I have been following the news and the crime in the neighborhood. My car was broken in to several years ago and the house down the street for me was robbed recently. I read the emails from the North Buckhead Civic Association about various crimes, suspicious cars/people. My point was that I do not feel unsafe. I am very comfortable walking down the street. I am not afraid to go to the store or dinner at night. Despite having my car broken into i do not feel threatened...wrong place wrong time. I did not say that I do not think crime is problem. I think as a community we can all pull together and be more aware of our surroundings. We need to notify authorities of anything specious and follow up with the authorities on it.

I agree with SP. It is unusual for the Buckhead community to experience this level of crime, however, crime is inevitable in every community no matter how "nice" or "safe" it is. With the increased police presence and the community's awareness of these unfortunate incidents, I am confident that the crime rate will decrease.
What we need not to do is categorize individuals in our neighborhoods as "ghetto trash" and label other citizens as "undesirable elements". The bottom line is that *criminals* need not to be in ANY neighborhood.
