Take Part in Poll on School Board SPLOST Election

Voters to decide Nov. 8 on 1-cent sales tax for APS

Buckhead and other city voters will decide Nov. 8 on whether to renew the 1-cent sales tax for city schools.

If voters approve, a renewed penny sales tax would raise $520 million over its five-year lifespan from 2013, by APS' math.

In Buckhead, $16 million would be set aside for a new elementary school, $14.7 million for renovating overcrowded E. Rivers Elementary and roughly $32 million to pay off bonds for the new North Atlanta High, although the school board would pay for the bonds from its general fund if the SPLOST IV vote fails.

Here is a Buckhead Patch poll to determine your views on the SPLOST.

        5 (11%)
    • I will vote no because school taxes are too high.
        13 (30%)

Please consider reporting on the entire sales tax components. I think we have recently been told there will be a penny for transportation, a penny for schools, a penny for the water and sewer dept......what else, and if everything were to be approved what would the total be?

Jon: The 1-cent sales tax for schools the only issue on Nov. 8 ballot, along with election on Sunday alcohol sales. Region will vote on 1 cent sales tax for transportation in 2012.

Thanks for the SPLOST IV update. Especially, for including the the C.O.P.S. Bonds that utilized to fund the construction of the Buckhead High School. The bonds have been issued and are the mechanism to finance the construction. SPLOST IV, if passes, will help pay them down/off. If SPLOST IV is not passed, they will be paid off from the APS General Fund. The Buckhead High School is moving forward regardless of SPLOST IV. I don't think that is being conveyed properly and in a transparent manner by many 'leaders'... - IMO.

"Louis Mayeux:

Ramiro: Thanks for the comment. Yes, the bonds will be paid for from the general fund if SPLOST IV is defeated. "

Louis -- Thanks for the confirmation. I'm not pro or against SPLOST IV, at this time. I am still mulling it over. Would you agree the the C.O.P.S. / Bonds finance vehicle for the Buckhead H.S. has not been clearly explained with relation to SPLOST?
