New Galloway Leader Seeks to Follow School Founder's Philosophy

Suzanna Jemsby says she wants to maintain Elliott Galloway's "passion" for education

Newly appointed Galloway head of school Suzanna Jemsby says “it’s too early to say” what she wants to accomplish until she learns more in depth about the Buckhead school.

However, she knows that her guide will be school founder Elliott Galloway.

In a phone interview with Buckhead Patch, Jemsby said that she wants “to make sure that we are the school that Elliott Galloway wanted us to be. He was pretty progressive and risk-taking in a good way.” She said she hopes the school keeps “operating with that passion.”

Another goal is “getting Galloway at little bit better known,” she said. Galloway, she said, is “a very community-based school that welcomes and works well with individuals. That’s something that needs to be out there and better understood.”

The Buckhead school, following Elliott Galloway’s philosophy, allows each student to evolve in his or her own way, she said. “The values of Galloway embrace the originality and uniqueness of each kid and each family.”

The Brookhaven resident said that one area on which she will focus is world languages. She speaks several languages herself. “I think that today, kids need to have at least two languages at very proficient level.”

With a background in music as well as writing, art and athletics, she brings a well-rounded outlook to Galloway. Formerly the head of Atlanta International’s Upper School, she said her experience as head of the Atlanta-based Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education has allowed her to work with elementary and middle school students as well as those in high school.

“I’m looking forward to applying that new knowledge to this new position,” she said.

She will take over at Galloway on July 1
