Police: Buckhead Seeing Uptick in Crime

Police say there has been an increase in car break-ins and home burglaries occurring in Zone 2.

Major Van Hobbs, Zone 2 commander for the Atlanta Police Department, said the Buckhead area is continuing to experience an "uptick in crime."

Hobbs described at Tuesday's NPU-B meeting that most of the crimes are car break-ins and home burglaries, according to BuckheadView.

He said that about 82 percent of car larcenies of the last year occurred in "open air areas," such as mall and restaurant parking lots.

Hobbs said the officers are also seeking to find ways to communicate this information to those coming to Buckhead to shop or play, especially since there are more than 200,000 parking spaces in Buckhead's Zone 2.

He has partnered with local malls and shopping centers to post signage reminding patrons to protect their valuables in their cars. Additionally, zone 2 bike units are dispatched to monitor the shopping centers and undercover officers also work the malls, BuckheadView reports.
