Playground Closed to Public After Vandalism

Intruders damage playhouse, leave weathervane lying on side

The popular St. James United Methodist Church playground has been closed to the public because of vandalism.

Sue Hardrath, director of the church’s preschool, said the vandals tore some shingles off a playhouse, pulled down some ropes and dented a tin roof by walking upon it. They also attempted to pull off the weathervane from atop a playhouse, and left it lying on its side. Shingles were found in the playground's water feature.

“This playground is used a lot by the community,” she said. “It’s very shady, and it’s nicer to be out in the summertime. It’s always open; now it’s locked.”

She said the playground was renovated about a year ago through funds raised by the church.

The Atlanta police have been notified, but have not yet come to the scene to make a report, she said.

She intends to have the playground open for summer camp the week of July 18.
