Atlanta Preservation Center's Buckhead in Bloom Tour Celebrates Historic Neighborhood

100th anniversary of Peachtree Heights Park West marked

The 100th anniversary of Buckhead's Peachtree Heights Park West neighborhood will be celebrated this weekend with the Atlanta Preservation Center's Buckhead in Bloom home and garden tour and lecture.

The home and garden tour will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, according to an Atlanta Preservation Center announcement. Peachtree Heights Park West, a national historic district, is the only known neighborhood planned by the early 20th century architectural firm Carrère and Hastings, which designed the New York Public Library.

Author and preservationist William “Bill” Mitchell in a lecture Friday night will speak about Carrère and Hastings' work. A cultural historian and a founder of the Southern Architecture Foundation, Mitchell will speak at 8 p.m. Friday in the Gould Room at the Cathedral of St. Philip. He is the author of many books including "J. Neel Reed, Architect," "Landmark Homes of Georgia" and "The Architecture of James Means, Georgia Classicist." Tickets are $10 and available by phone at 404-688-3353, extension 11, and at the door

The tour will begin at the building that was the original real estate office for Peachtree Heights Park West. The building, built by Carrère and Hastings, is known variously as E. Rivers’ kindergarten, the Scout headquarters or the Lodge at E. Rivers Elementary School.

Tickets for the home and garden tour are $40, $30 for Atlanta Preservation Center members. They are available in advance through Saturday by calling the preservation center at 404-688-3353 Extension 11 or at the following locations: Boxwoods Garden and Gifts, Cathedral Bookstore, Habersham Gardens and the Swan Coach House.

Tickets will also be available Sunday from 11:30 am to 4 p.m. at 8 Peachtree Battle Ave. (The Lodge at E. Rivers Elementary School).
