Buckhead Coalition Founding President Sam Massell Honored with Bus Sign

The bus signage features a headshot of the former Atlanta mayor and a special thanks for his service to Atlanta and to Buckhead.

Still celebrating 25 years of civic service, two Buckhead Coalition Chairmen have surprised the organization's president Sam Massell with custom signage on the side of a MARTA bus.

The banner with Massell's larger-than-life headshot congratulates him for his public service as mayor of Atlanta as well as his service since 1988 as Coalition president.

Those responsible for the idea and pro bono arrangements were 2011-2012 chairman Sonny Morris and 2013-2014 chairman Dave Fitzgerald. They chose the MARTA bus location for the signage because Massell, when mayor of Atlanta, was the one who structured the sales tax arrangement for funding the city’s mass transit system and was then successful in getting the referendum passed to put MARTA in operation.

Massell was, of course, pleased, but joked he hoped his photo “wouldn’t attract negative graffiti reminiscent of typical political campaigns.”

On reflection, however, he reasoned that managing the Buckhead nonprofit group was very similar to running the city at large and that he “finds both constituencies equally rewarding.”
