Buckhead Heritage Society Celebrates 175 Years

In 1838, for just $650, Henry Irby purchased 202 ½ acres surrounding the present intersection of Peachtree, Roswell, and West Paces Ferry roads. He soon established a general store at the junction and a small crossroads community was born.

This year, Buckhead Heritage and the Buckhead Business Association will celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the community with an evening party at the Buckhead Theatre, which stands at the historic hub of
this once far-flung, rural settlement. Guests at the event will enjoy drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and great music from the band Atlanta Allstars. A photographic retrospective of Buckhead’s history will also educate, entertain, and encourage guests to share their own memories of this everevolving community.

The honorary co-chairs for Buckhead 175th Anniversary Celebration are Charlie Loudermilk, the co-founder and former chairman of Aaron’s Rents and owner of the Buckhead Theatre, and Sam Massell, former Atlanta mayor and founding president of the Buckhead Coalition. The event cochairs are Caroline and Boyd Leake, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Buckhead Heritage Society.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Buckhead Heritage and the creation of a Master History Plan for the community that will map out how to integrate historic sites and stories into the Buckhead Collection—a system of new parks, trails, and green spaces envisioned for the community and spearheaded by Livable Buckhead, Inc. The history planning project will develop the storylines to present, identify which sites should be used to tell Buckhead’s rich history, and recommend the best ways to share each story with the community—through
signage, exhibits, public art, publications, or digital media.

The Buckhead Heritage Society, in partnership with the Buckhead Business Association, will present Buckhead’s 175th Anniversary Celebration: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow on Friday, March 1, 2013, at 7 p.m. at the Buckhead Theatre at 3110 Roswell Road, Atlanta, GA 30305.

Tickets are $150 for Buckhead Heritage or Buckhead Business Association members. Tickets are $175 for non-members.

In advance of the celebration, Buckhead Heritage will hold a Historic Photograph Collection Session on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Sardis United Methodist Church at 3725 Powers Ferry Road, Atlanta, GA 30342. Buckhead Heritage invites the public to bring historic photographs of Buckhead to be scanned by the organization and preserved digitally in the Buckhead Heritage archives. The best images will be
displayed at Buckhead’s 175th Anniversary Celebration: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow on March 1.
