Trees Atlanta Hires Kudzu-Eating Sheep

Kudzu can get pretty baaaad (pardon the pun) in Atlanta. Trees Atlanta is using an eco-friendly method to rid Chastain Park of the green stuff.

Trees Atlanta and the Chastain Park Conservancy have teamed up to clean the kudzu out of Chastain Park using a method that is organic, environmentally friendly and kind of adorable: sheep.

Yes, they've hired a flock of 100 sheep to munch on the kudzu that plagues Atlanta and they want everyone to come meet their new hires. They're throwing a Breakfast with the Sheep party in the park on June 8 at 9 a.m.

Partygoers will be able to feed the sheep, do some arts and crafts and learn about the importance of removing invasive plants like kudzu. (Don't worry, there will be food for the humans to eat, provided by the Ritz Carlton Buckhead.)

The party is free, but please RSVP to the event on Facebook.

Chastain Park is just the first stop on the summer kudzu eradication tour for these sheep. Keep up with their activities on Trees Atlanta's Twitter and Facebook pages.

Using sheep and goats to eat kudzu might be unusual, but isn't totally unheard-of. 11 Alive used a flock to clear kudzu off their studio's property and provides a flock for residential kudzu clearing.

As a student who spends a lot of time around Chastain park playing golf, enjoying the pool and fishing near the Conservancy offices I am glad to see that things are being done to maintain a pretty atmosphere and taking steps to control the kudzu. It's good that they are taking initiative to deal with the kudzu in an environmentally friendly way that is also very creative. And it helps the local sheep population by giving them free food while they clean up the weeds. Its a win-win situation.

Henry, I agree. Should be a fun photo op!
