Behind the Buck: Artist Vicki Cimkentli Says Colors Inspire Her

1) Tell us about your Buck(s). 

I created 3 bucks.  The size of them was the first major challenge.  Over 8 feet tall, the only place I could put them was in the garage, and I was working most of the time on a ladder! The first, Henri, was designed as an homage to Henri himself, the founder of Henri's Bakery. I wanted to keep with the design of the actual bakery, but felt he needed a little "extra" - hence I added a chefs hat, apron (with pocket and spoon) and cake made out of aluminum. The hat was the biggest challenge - each of the folds was made separately and then riveted together.  And then he came to life! 

Super Buck - I wanted to create a superhero for Buckhead to represent Buckhead rising back out of the ashes of construction!!  He holds the globe of Super Buckhead in his hand.  Again, I added some aluminum in the form of his cape. 

Buckhead Boy - I was extremely honored to get the task of painting Buckhead Boy.  It is a simple design, with his sweater in the color of the Buckhead flag.  He holds fort outside the Buckhead Coalition offices and even has his own garden. 

2) In general, where do you find the inspiration for your art?

I find the inspiration for art in the colors of everyday life. I love bold colors, particularly reds and oranges. My chosen medium is acrylic. I'm currently working on a cupcake series, and will also be designing a range of greeting cards from the paintings. 

3) How did you become an artist? 

I have always loved art, although I have only recently started selling my original paintings.  As mentioned before, my paintings are really all about the colors - that is the important part for me.  I'm not yet fortunate enough to be an artist full-time, however...

4) Is there anything else you'd like to share with Buckhead Patch readers? 

I am also an author - I published the book "Basquiat: A Catahoula Dog Tale" late last year (available on Amazon.com) and am in the process of publishing my second book.  I have been married for almost 15 years to a professional magician!
