Bill Would Allow Vote on Sunday Alcohol Sales

Buckhead residents would be included in referendum

Buckhead city council member Yolanda Adrean is among sponsors of legislation that would allow a referendum on the sales of liquor, wine and beer on Sundays within Atlanta.

"I am supporting the right for citizens to vote to decide whether or not we have Sunday alcohol sales," Adrean said in an e-mail to Buckhead Patch. "Many Georgia municipalities  have passed similar resolutions to let citizens decide, including  Sandy Springs, Alpharetta and Dunwoody. Today 37 states permit sale of alcohol on Sundays."

Along with Adrean, who represents District 8, others sponsors of proposed Ordinance #11-O-1169 are council members Alex Wan, Kwanza Hall, Cleta Winslow, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Michael Julian Bond and H. Lamar Willis, according to an Atlanta City Council news release. Sunday alcohol sales legislation was approved by the Georgia General Assembly this year. If voters approve, Buckhead supermarkets, liquor stores and convenience stores could sell alcohol on Sundays.

If approved, the local ordinance would call on city voters to decide on Sunday alcohol sales in a Nov. 8 referendum. The ballot already includes the Atlanta School Board's request to extend a 1 cent sales tax and a special election to fill the vacant school board District 2 seat, outside of Buckhead.

The council is holding a public hearing on the Sunday alcohol sales proposal during its 1 p.m. meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Atlanta City Hall, Council Chamber (second floor), 55 Trinity Ave.
