Cranes Move as Construction Begins at Buckhead Atlanta

OliverMcMillan's Hunter Richardson, project manager of Buckhead Atlanta, said work has moved from pre-construction to construction in order to open the first portion of the project at the end of 2013.

The cranes over development began moving today, marking the first day of construction on what developer OliverMcMillan fully intends to be the Southeast's premier luxury destination.

"For years, we have anticipated the start of construction on the transformative Buckhead Atlanta, which when completed, will be a sign of Atlanta's resilience and innovation," said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. "A rejuvenated Buckhead will not only attract the nations top developers and retailers but thousands of new consumers and residents."

Located on 8 acres across six city blocks, Buckhead Atlanta is designed as a completely walkable community that will connect two main arteries of Atlanta at Peachtree and West Paces where local residents and bustling life collide. Contractor Balfour Beatty Construction began construction today on the ambitious project that, once completed, will offer 300,000 square feet of upscale retail stores, restaurants and cafes, over 100,000 square feet of office space and 370 luxury high-rise residences — around 1.5 million square feet total.

, the French high-fashion design house that currently resides across Buckhead Avenue from the development, will be the first of many upscale establishments to open at Buckhead Atlanta.

Richardson said more retailers and restaurants will be announced later in the year.

Expect a full report, with more photos and conversation with Richardson, tomorrow on Buckhead Patch.

I'm glad the giant hole in the ground is finally getting work started again. I hope they don't make every place so "high end" as originally planned. If so, I don't think it will be a place I will visit much. I think Ponce City Market will be the best destination spot in Atlanta when it's done (about the same time). I think this place will attract the Real Housewives of Atlanta type.

Ponce City Market looks wonderful but don't write off Buckhead Atlanta just because it includes luxury retail and expensive restaurants. The Westside Provisions District is a great example of an authentic luxury development with character in Atlanta.

I just hope there's adequate parking, which seems to be in short supply in this city.........and, free parking attracts more people, but I am sure none of this will be free.
