House Hunt: Striking Features

A cozy study and a compact fireplace mark featured homes

Unusual choices that work are the focus this week. I refer, in this case, to proportions (which can be a function of floorplan and the practicalities of construction and livability — or not) or materials (which usually stem from cost and availability) deployed in a way that invite a double-take after a first glimpse.

At one time I aspired to the sort of office/study that can be seen inside 2795 Peachtree Road, Unit 1904: imposing shelving in a dark wood that fosters quiet or conversation, and that invites eyeballing of the shelves' various contents. You know, like a space inside some British clubroom of the mind, where Arthur Conan Doyle's Dr. Watson might've swapped tales with the author's Professor Challenger.

Unit 1904's use of cherry wood in its study and elsewhere is unusual because, as the address suggests, it is 19 stories above the ground, in a condominium tower. Custom storage in the master closet incorporates this handsome material, too. The kitchen also qualifies as a cherry(wood) jubilee, wherein even the refrigerator doors match the surrounding cabinets!

This condo has a southern view through its floor-to-ceiling windows. It also has hardwood floors, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms (plus a half bath). The tower has a swimming pool, a lighted tennis court, and exercise facilities.

In my mind's eye, the Platonic ideal of the fireplace is wider than it is tall — think of the one at Charles Foster Kane's Xanadu. Not so for the fireplace at 2213 Parkview Lane. Compact, rather than roomy, this hearth nonetheless fits the space it occupies, a (potentially) sunny parlor. This home also has dining room wainscot that rises to about average shoulder height, rather than the more common midriffy sort. The home almost seems to have been designed for tall people.

No. 2213 has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, granite counters in the kitchen, a white picket fence out front, and a deck overlooking the meticulously landscaped yard out back. Exterior speakers feed sound to that deck.
