Mays & Kerr Bolsters Employment and Litigation Practice with the Addition of Two Veteran Attorneys

ATLANTA, April 24, 2014 – Mays & Kerr LLC announces the addition of two attorneys, David J. Maher and Winfield W. Murray, expanding the firm’s Employment Law & Litigation, Wage & Hour, and Appellate practices. Both will focus on cases involving employment, litigation and wage and hour issues, including individual and collective actions, misclassification, unpaid hours claims and discrimination suits that violate the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

“With the additions of Maher and Murray, we increase our capabilities to provide high-quality legal counsel to businesses of all sizes, including employers and employees in a wide range of industries in Georgia and across the Southeast,” said John Mays, employment attorney and founding partner of Mays & Kerr LLC. “As a young firm, we continue to assess our growth on direct feedback from our clients and their legal needs, and continue to look for talented attorneys to join our growing team.”

David Maher joins the firm as of counsel, bringing with him more than 20 years of legal experience, and will focus primarily on the firm’s appellate work. He served as a staff attorney with the U. S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit where he performed extensive research and drafted judicial memoranda in several practice areas, including employment, immigration, and civil rights. When his term expired, Maher joined Drew Eckl & Farnham, LLP where he practiced insurance defense litigation. His background also includes serving as a litigation associate in the labor and employment litigation group with Steel Hector & Davis, an associate with the civil appellate boutique Hicks & Anderson, and as an associate and partner handling all aspects of civil appeals with Harke & Clasby, LLP, all in Miami, Fla. Maher received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and his law degree from Florida State University College of Law.

Winfield Murray joins the firm as an associate where he will specialize in litigation in federal court over unpaid wages and wrongful terminations arising under the FLSA, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Murray served as an attorney with the U. S. Department of Labor where he litigated cases involving compliance and regulatory issues. There, he completed global settlements that involved substantial penalties and significantly reduced a backlog of cases within the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which garnered millions of dollars in penalties for the federal government. Prior to his tenure with the federal government, Murray served as a prosecutor with the City of Atlanta for seven years.

Murray also worked as a labor relations specialist for the Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. and clerked for the chief judge of the Territorial Court of the U.S. Virgin Islands handling both civil and criminal matters. Murray earned his bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College, his law degree from Howard University School of Law, and his master of laws from The George Washington University School of Law.
