One Mom's Journey to Health and Wellness

This week this professional mother of four began a detoxification program to jump start her commitment to taking better care of herself. Follow along to see what she learns about self care.

Today is day 5 of the Standard Process 21-Day Purification Program for me and my fellow clients and clinicians at TRU Integrative Health and Wellness. So far, so good. I fee like I am becoming more mentally clear, colors look brighter, my thoughts feel sharper and I don't notice the fatigue I usually experience at the end of the day. I even think I have lost a few pounds! My son Elliott's skin looks clearer and brighter, and I notice a shine in my eyes that hasn't been there for quite awhile.

I am getting into the groove with the diet too. Today for lunch I had a flavor filled lentil salad and for dinner I had a beautiful plate of roasted vegetables. I added walnuts for my son who could have them, those of us on the cleanse avoided them. I feel like I need to eat more frequently like this, but I am not eating as much. Everything I eat feels decadent and nurturing. I slept six hours straight last night for the first time in forever.

Last night we had a wonderful gift arrive. A sweet benefactor gifted us with a juicer. You would have thought Santa Claus had come! We made the most delicious drinks with cucumber, spinach, apples, ginger, carrots and oranges. The juice was so satisfying and left my stomach feeling comforted and my body feeling nourished. I have juiced in the past, but never had much luck finding any juice I enjoyed. I think the key is loading it with a variety of flavorful foods. I am looking forward to having a yummy glass of juice before bed tonight instead of a glass of wine.

Today my son came to me with an article about Mad Cow Disease in an effort to sway me towards the vegan diet that he is considering. Did I tell you he is 12? This eating mindfully is really causing us to be aware of what we are putting into our bodies and what goes into the foods we bring home. It has sparked several really interesting and healthy conversations in my home. I love the effects on all of us!

I have spoken to you of my renewed commitment to self care. On tonight's agenda is a bubble bath coupled with some music I have compiled on my iPod but haven't taken the time to enjoy. As a psychotherapist and as a fellow journeyman on the path to wellness, I hope you are finding time to do things that bring you joy and that nurture your spirit. I intend to get used to this!
