Buckhead Seeks to Beat the Heat

With mid-90 temperatures, pools popular, but some folks still pursuing non-water sports

Hot enough for you?

Although it's early June, temperatures in the mid-90s and dry weather have Buckhead folks flocking to swimming pools, cool bars and movie theaters. Even a bit of shade gives welcome relief.

The heat and humidity almost make you long for the snow-bound days of last January. Just a bit of that ice would be nice now, although it wouldn't last very long in these temperatures.

On Friday, the swimming pool was full of water-lovers. Despite the heat, kids were still hitting balls at the Chastain Park Tennis Center camp. Golfers were walking — and riding — the fairways at North Fulton Golf Course. A few folks were even running and walking around the PATH trail.

Bill Cormier, an editor at Associated Press, and his children, Victoria, 9, and Eric, 11, were among families swimming at the Chastain Pool.

Cormier, of Sandy Springs, said that with the high gas prices, he's enjoying a "stay-cation " from work, although he plans to take the family camping in Tennessee for a few days.

"There's plenty to do in Atlanta," Cormier said. "It's nice to stay at home."

The day before he took the kids hiking up Stone Mountain, where a thermometer registered 97 degrees. With a jug of water, the kids made it fine, he said.

"But this is a better option," he said with a grin, waving his hand toward the crystal-blue pool. "Sitting down at the watering hole."

This weekend will be another scorcher, and the National Weather Service predicts the heat to continue through next week. On Monday, summer camps begin at , and , where swimming promises to be a popular activity.

With the weather already this hot, July and August loom oppressively. Just hope the air conditioner keeps going and remember that fall will arrive in a few months.
