Family best bets of the week

Spring is in the air! Put away the boots and mittens (at least for this weekend) and enjoy these...

Family Best Bets:

  • THE MUSIC MAN AT LOVETT 

When/Where: Thursday, Friday and Saturday  at 7 p.m. in the Hendrix-Chenault Theater at Lovett.
Why Go: "The Music Man" is a classic American musical.
Pricing: Tickets will be available at the door for $8 each.

  • TOUR THE GOVERNOR'S MANSION

When/Where: Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30a.m. at the Governor's Mansion.
Why Go: With docents stationed in each room of the mansion, families can move through the tour at their own pace (it is recommended that you arrive before 11 a.m. as tours end at 11:30). While fun and interesting for adults, the tour also provides a terrific opportunity to teach children about Georgia government and history — see the Mansion website for educational and coloring sheets for children.

  • FRIENDS OF THE NORTHSIDE LIBRARY BOOK SALE

When/Where: Friday noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the .
Why Go: Books, books and more books for sale. Good for you and good for the library, too.
Pricing: Free

  • PICNIC AT THE PLAYGROUND

When/Where: For brunch or lunch on Saturday or Sunday at .
Why Go: The springlike weather is the perfect reason to picnic and play — ( is only a couple of minutes down the road).
Pricing: Playground is free.

  • BIRDS OF WONDER

When/Where: Saturday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
Why Go: In this drop-in family class, children will learn about how their favorite garden birds spend the winter. They will also mimic the creation of a nest and make a natural bird feeder.
Pricing:  $6 per child plus garden admission. (For members, the cost is  $5  per child.)

  • ICE SKATING AT THE RINK

When/Where: Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. for family- friendly skating at The Rink at Park Tavern.
Why Go: With skating extended through February, time is running out to hit the ice this season.
Pricing: $10 to skate and $5 for skate rental.
