Great Escape: YMCA Parent's Morning Out

The Carl E. Sanders YMCA at Buckhead will take care of your children so you can take care of yourself

Your teens are holding a car wash at the high school Saturday. The grandparents volunteered to take the younger children to a movie Sunday afternoon. Your tweens take tap on Wednesday evening.  It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier, maybe a whole lot easier.

Mothers, imagine regularly having four hours all to yourself on weekdays — no kids, no carpools, no lunches to make, and no babysitter calls. This week's Great Escape gives you a chance to make it happen, and leaves you with wiggle room to do whatever suits your fancy. The Carl E. Sanders YMCA in Buckhead offers mothers a trustworthy and affordable child-care program called Parent's Morning Out. Sessions are from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., available for children ages 18 months to 5 years.

YMCA staff provide children with games, learning activities, snacks and lunch while you are away. They frequently use the playground and gym to play. Enrollment capacity is based on a strict staff to child ratio, averaging 24 children each day. All YMCA staff are trained in CPR, first aid and YMCA child care.

Courtney Severson, financial development director at the Y, said of Parent's Morning Out, "It gives [parents] a sense of freedom, but they know that their children are in a safe place." She said the best part for parents is when their children are excited to be dropped off at the YMCA for the morning.

Sessions are organized into three packages: Mondays/Wednesdays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The Tuesday program focuses on athletic activities, and the Thursday session emphasizes creative and musical development. Monday/Wednesdays is a mix of both. Weekly or monthly fees apply, and YMCA members receive a discounted rate.  Severson said that because the YMCA is a nonprofit organization, financial help can be given to parents in need.
