House Hunt: Renovated Jewels

.Redone homes show versatility, charm

People make a mark on their homes. This week's column considers the ways occupants have modified the living spaces for which they now seek buyers.

The owner of 3195 Habersham Road, who happens to be a Realtor, enclosed the upper portion of what was once a balconied front porch to make a home office for herself. She and her husband did about four months of renovation to the property after purchasing it in the mid-1960s. They also converted to a garden room and large storage area what had been a single-car garage at one end of the home.

Marble steps (with intermittent wrought-iron railing) wind uphill to the red front door, which the couple also added. No. 3195, erected in 1939, has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a pair of half baths. Several of its rooms feature custom shutters. A sliding glass door in the garden room opens onto a brick patio/grill setup. According to its owner, the home stands on a lot just under an acre in size.

An orthopoedic surgeon who clearly understands what kids like is the owner of 30 Abington Ct. This house, completed in 1988, had a finished basement that in 2000 became home to billiard and exercise rooms and a home theater. Out back is a multiuse sporting court that accommodates football practice equipment and a basketball hoop.

This traditional, two-story brick house has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and a pair of half baths. Its other notable features include a basement kitchenette and hot tub, integrated kitchen and keeping room with a dividing bar/island, and a formal dining room with a chandelier depending from a coffered ceiling. No. 30 stands just shy of Abington Court's cul de sac and a short drive, via Howell Mill Road, from I-75.
