Plans Complete for MARTA Pedestrian Bridge

Work to begin in fall for project over Ga. 400 from Tower Place Drive, Stratford Road to Buckhead Station

Final design and engineering plans are complete for a $24 million pedestrian bridge that will connect MARTA's Buckhead Station to areas on the north side of Peachtree Road.

Jim Durrett, executive director of the Buckhead Community Improvement District and chairman of the MARTA Board of Directors, hailed the plans' completion on the Buckhead CID's Web site. He said the bridge "will span Ga. 400, connecting two disconnected quadrants in Buckhead and creating a new entrance to MARTA's Buckhead Station.

"BCID was instrumental in pulling together the necessary funding, including $1.2 million from BCID, to secure a project of this magnitude," Durrett said. "In addition, the BCID board distributed information and facilitated meetings among Buckhead businesses, developers and community leaders to build consensus and support."

Construction on the project will begin this fall and be completed by mid-2013, he said. Once the bridge is complete, pedestrians from Tower Place Drive and Stratford Road on the north side of Peachtree will have direct access to both sides of Ga. 400 and to MARTA’s Buckhead Station without having to walk to Peachtree Road, making existing and future development transit-accessible.

Durrett said in an e-mail that MARTA, with the CID's assistance, is in the final stages of negotiating temporary construction easements and permanent easements with the property owners on both sides of Ga. 400. The agencies hope to have that finished in April, he said. With the design finished, the notice to bidders will be going out soon, he said.
