Workers on Wednesday prepared the great tree for the ceremony on Thanksgiving Day.
The workers placed scaffolding for support around the tree as dark clouds swirled in the background.
The Georgia white pine, about 42 years old and weighing 12,000 pounds, was placed atop the Macy's building at Lenox Square in Buckhead Tuesday afternoon. The tree belonged to Rachel Deal in Lithia Springs, Macy's said. Her father brought the tree from their cabin at Lake Burton in the North Georgia Mountains as a seedling and planted it at their home.
The tree was the second selected for the tree lighting. On Sunday, the orginal tree's trunk broke because of stress from the low amount of rain in the region the last few months, Macy's said.
The an Atlanta tradition that began at the Rich's store downtown, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thanksgiving night and be broadcast on WSB-TV. "American Idol" Scotty McCreery and the gospel duo Mary Mary will perform.
