Norwood, Dickens Unofficial Winners in Atlanta City Council Election

Mayor Kasim Reed easily wins a second term, but incumbents Aaron Watson and H. Lamar Willis appear to have lost in their bids to be re-elected to the Atlanta City Council.

Mayor Kasim Reed received more than 84 percent of the votes cast in Tuesday's Atlanta municipal elections and easily won a second term, according to unofficial results.

But incumbents Aaron Watson and H. Lamar Willis appear to have lost to challengers in their bids to be re-elected to the Atlanta City Council.

Mary Norwood will make a triumphant return to council after winning the Post 2 at-large council seat, while Andre Dickens will join the city council in the Post 3 at-large seat.

With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Norwood, who lost her bid for mayor four years ago by just 714 votes to Reed in a runoff, appears to have edged Watson with 52.75 percent of the vote.

Dickens garnered 52.77 percent of the votes to unofficially score the Post 3 win over Willis (46.79 percent). Both Watson and Willis had been backed by the mayor.

In another closely watched race, Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong appears to have been victorious in a fourth bid to represent District 5, but at least one opponent has indicated the results will be challenged after voting issues involving incorrect ballots in Candler Park.

Elsewhere, Council President Ceasar Mitchell, who is expected to make a bid for mayor in 2017, easily won.

While Councilmembers Yolanda Adrean, Kwanza Hall, Michael Julian Bond, and C.T. Martin ran unopposed, fellow Councilmembers Carla Smith, Ivory Lee Young Jr., Cleta Winslow, Alex Wan, Howard Shook, Felicia Moore, Keisha Lance Bottoms and Joyce Sheperd, were easily victorious, as well.

At a gathering of supporters at The Colonnade Restaurant, District 6 Councilman Wan said he was excited to represent his district for another four years.

“I’m going to be a financial watchdog for the City going forward, Wan said. “It’s easy to be tight when the money is not there. It’s harder to be when the money starts coming in and as our revenues are recovering, we have a tendency to spend that frivolously.

The Councilman added, “And I want to make sure we invest smartly in repairing infrastructure. It’s a challenge that we face and acknowledge. … I’m looking forward to working for my constituents and the City.”
