Artist Talk at Hagedorn: Concepts of Cartography and Visual Art

SCAD Dean Steve Aishman discusses two solo
exhibitions currently on exhibit at Hagedorn Foundation Gallery: "1h"
from Hans Christian Schink and "Night Map" from Nanna Debois Buhl. Aishman
will discuss how Buhl and Schink’s work participate in the continued evolution
of cartography by displaying contemporary visual representations of how humans
locate themselves in a place.



As long ago as 16,500 BC, humans started drawing
maps of the night sky. Cartography represents more than just mapping, it
represents the human desire to locate where we are in relation to other humans
and to the universe around us. As our understanding of the world and ourselves
has changed, our maps have changed.



Steve Aishman is the dean of Academic Services at the SCAD Atlanta. Before becoming dean,
Aishman was a professor of photography and cultural theory at institutions such
as Harvard, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and the School of the
Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Aishman has his undergraduate degree in
astrophysics from Princeton University and his master's in photography from
Tufts University. His artwork revolves around issues of contemporary visual
language.
