The four electric vehicle charging stations will be operational in the Lower Level Bloomingdale’s parking deck, near the Food Court entrance. The unveiling event will begin at 10:30 a.m., with speakers, demonstration and ribbon cutting. Speakers will include Robin Suggs, area mall manager for Simon Property Group; Jacob Winkler, ECOtality, Inc.; Bob Stoner with Livable Buckhead, Inc.; and Don Francis, Clean Cities.

“Electric vehicles are here, and Georgia Power is excited about projects like this that grow the charging infrastructure in our area,” said Ben Echols, Georgia Power’s electric transportation program manager. “In surveys done with electric vehicle owners, shopping centers are consistently at the top of the list for desired  locations for vehicle charging. We are glad that Simon Property Group has stepped up to provide this service to their customers driving electric  vehicles.”

These Blink EV charging stations will be self-service and easy to operate. Shoppers will be able to just “pull up and plug in” and leave their vehicles at the charging station while they are enjoying time at the mall. Charging will be free during an introductory time period and then a nominal fee will be assessed.

Production numbers from EV automakers project approximately a million EVs on U.S. roads by 2015, and possibly 27 million (or 10 percent of all vehicles in the U.S.) by 2020.

“We believe that a well-developed EV charging infrastructure is going to be key to the success of EVs,” said George Caraghiaur, Simon Property Group’s senior vice president of energy and procurement. “Meeting the needs of the first-to-market drivers of electric vehicles in the communities we serve is yet another example of our commitment to sustainability.”

Simon is working with ECOtality for the Lenox Square charging stations. San Francisco-based ECOtality, Inc., is a leader in clean electric transportation and storage technologies with a history in electric transportation dating back to1989.

"We are extremely excited to partner with Livable Buckhead, Inc. and Simon Property Group in installing Blink charging stations at Lenox Square in the prestigious Buckhead area," stated Stephanie Cox, stakeholder services area manager for ECOtality, Inc. "As we continue to introduce our Blink offering to Atlantans, we are proud to offer an added sustainable amenity to shoppers."

The installation of EV charging stations is part of the larger effort by Lenox Square, in conjunction with Livable Buckhead, Inc., to make the mall an even more conscious member of the Buckhead community and to ensure the long term vitality and prosperity of the area.

“When we heard about ECOtality’s EV Project, we immediately thought of Simon Properties and Lenox Square,” said Denise Starling, executive director of Livable Buckhead. “Connecting our partners to projects like this builds Buckhead’s green infrastructure and positions us for sustainable growth over the long-term.”

Lenox Square is also celebrating National Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Day Odyssey on October 18 and will offer EV enthusiasts and opportunity to view a number of environmentally friendly vehicles in the Food Court parking lot between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. More than 14 EV vehicles will be on display and will include a various types of  automobiles – from light-duty trucks to personal cars.
