When it comes to being fashion forward, it's a given that New Yorkers, Parisians and Milanese set the style trends that the rest of the world follows.
According to Travel + Leisure magazine, which ranked America's worst dressed people, Atlanta is a hot mess.
Atlanta is ranked No.7 on the magazine's list, as picked by readers. Anchorage, Alaska is ranked the No. 1 worst dressed.
Buckhead residents might have a little something to say about that.
For Atlanta, Buckhead remains the hot spot for fashion. As a fashion district, Buckhead features Lenox Square, , designers of all kinds and unique shops. The Barney's Co Op will be closing soon at Phipps, but that still leaves a high number of high fashion shops at Buckhead/Atlanta's disposal.
Well dressed, fashion afficionados abound in this community. So how did Atlanta end up on the worst dressed list?
The blame actually rests on the shoulders of The Real Housewives of Atlanta reality series.
The magazine wrote: "If the flashy reality-TV stars of The Real Housewives of Atlanta are at all indicative of how the rest of Atlanta dresses, it's no wonder our readers ranked it as America's No. 7 least-stylish city. Hotlanta has one of the highest per capita incomes of any southern city, but as the TV show illustrates and the saying goes: money can't buy taste."
True, spend any amount of time at Lenox Square Mall on a given weekend, you're likely to see one fashion faux pas after another.
But to be fair, only two of The Real Housewives of Atlanta's cast members actually live in Atlanta. Fashion model Cynthia Bailey, whose modeling agency is in Glenwood Park, calls Atlanta home (Her husband, Peter Thomas, is an owner of Bar One in Grant Park.)
Attorney Phaedra C. Parks also lives in the city.
The rest of the cast — Nene Leakes, Kim Zolciak and Kandi Burruss — all live outside the city limits.
So the city may be getting unfairly saddled with the fashion failures of what passes for style outside the Perimeter.
