Dating Over 40 "The Speed of Life"

By: Kenneth Stepp

Speed. We all have one. My speed started ramping up in 2013, when I found myself alone in the singles arena. To someone in my previous position. I am now running at mach 7. My ex feels it as well. In her daily life. The singles I meet feel it as well. It must be a natural phenomenon to be so prevalent. Life in the proverbial fast lane. Who knew?

Everyone has a certain cadence to their lives. A rhythm, or as I call it, a speed. An unseen force controls it. It may be, however. Easy to explain. All those things in your life that have to get done. Are now being done by less people. For example. Some of my duties as a husband and father were as follows. I woke up each morning first. Got the coffee going. Everything that needed ironing for the morning, I was “Iron Man”.  She would make a to do list for me before leaving for work. I would knock that out between my work, I work from home. I also folded and hung up all the laundry. I was the cleanup crew after the meals. I was the taxi driver of the family. Much more. My ex is coordinating graduations and so much more right now. So, you can see why her life sped up. Mine? Because I had to “restart” my life.

For myself. I travel six days a week. It’s fairly local travel. But, it’s travel. I have four primary sources of income and just took on a big one. I wake up early. Usually between 3 or 4 in the morning. I work on my nonprofit then. I give it about three hours per day. Two in the morning, one before bed. I consult businesses. I sell remodeling jobs. I write. And now. I will lead a small staff in the media game. Most can be done online and by phone. This is the life I created. Mostly, on purpose.

My top goal is not to make a bunch of money. I did that and it wasn’t fulfilling at all. It isn’t to live lavishly, although. My life and lifestyle do rock. It is to find “Her”. It is for this reason I created the way I earn my living. I will be able to insert my life into hers. Most of the girls I meet own their home, like where they live, and live in an area where their life happens. If this amazing creature will have me. The plan of two people pulling the cart instead of one takes shape. Both of our lives become easier. There is more money, time, and conversation to be had. I use to love taking a long weekend every month and have a mini vacation. We can if she can. Sweet.

By getting use to the speed we are forced to go in singleness. We can take those quiet moments and feel the blessings of being someone’s partner in life. It does have it’s perks. Too many to list in this writing. Everyone has a favorite part of being someone’s other half. Mine is odd. Or maybe unthought of as a favorite. I love lying in bed, snuggled up, lights off. And having deep conversations. Dreams, goals, even short term plans. Likes and dislikes. You learn so much about one another by doing this. It’s a bonding process for me. It’s funny what tends to matter to a person once they are away from the oneness of being a couple.

Being single has advantages as well. None that compare to partnering though. At least to me. I would never partner with a girl that tried to control me. I am a free person, so is she. Freedom to live life, do things, the way we want to do them. So, these things would not change. Leaving what I see, as the good stuff. My life is at light speed at the moment. I can’t wait to slow down and enjoy every second of it. Of course. I live an adventure a day now. The thought of making life even better is exciting.
