Luckovich Meets with Pace Middle Schoolers

Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich paid a visit to Pace Academy Middle School students on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Middle School critical thinking teacher Jan Bedol arranged the visit for her students, who frequently discuss politics, current events and political cartoons in class. They’ve even drawn their own cartoons!

The two-time Pulitzer Prize winner answered students’ thoughtful questions and provided insight into his career path. I did my first cartoon when I was 14,” Luckovich told them. “It was about Richard Nixon and Watergate. I gave it to my grandmother. It was in black and white, and wasn't very good, but that began my political cartooning.”

Luckovich went on to say that he finds drawing cartoons about religion difficult. “You can't insult other people's religion,” he said. “It's a very fine line that you have to walk.”
