APD officer in serious condition after being hit by suspected drunk driver

Officer Osbert Beckles was working traffic on the Interstate 75 exit ramp at Northside Parkway late Friday night when his patrol car was slammed into by another vehicle.

An Atlanta police officer is at Grady Hospital in serious condition after a suspected drunk driver hit him on the exit ramp on Interstate 75 at Northside Parkway late Friday evening.

Officer Osbert Beckles, who is expected to survive, is being treated for head and chest injuries along with broken bones according to APD spokesman John Chafee.

WSB-TV reports that Beckles was working traffic in the area about 11:30 p.m. when a 2011 Hyundai Sonata operated by Scott Eugene Welker collided with the officer’s patrol car.

Welker, 45, of Kennesaw, attempted to leave the scene on foot following the accident but was soon after apprehended according to the news station.

Welker, who has been charged with driving under the influence and five additional traffic-related charges, is currently in the Fulton County Jail.
