APD Seeks Sexual Aggressor Against Women

Incident this week first since string of such cases last January

An intruder made sexual gestures this week toward a female resident of a Buckhead apartment complex, the first such incident since a string of them last January, the Atlanta Police Department said.

APD Special Victims Unit Commander Lt. Stacie Gibbs, in a press conference at headquarters Tuesday afternoon, said that the intruder "is exposing himself to females and making sexual gestures to them."

Speaking of the incidents in January, she said "we believe it's the same person." She said a similar incident occurred in 2009.

Gibbs said none of the vicitms, including the latest one, have been raped, or physically hurt. In some of the cases, the burglar has taken items such as laptops and cash. Gibbs said the attacks occur between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., when the victims are sleeping and their apartments are dark, making identifications difficult.

After the incident this week, the police department said it called the press conference to ask residents to be especially vigilant and to call the police if they see someone suspicious. Anyone with information can call 911, or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.

The intruder was described as a black male, 5 foot 8, of medium build and wearing dark clothes. The victims said that the man's voice sounded as if he's in his mid to late 30s. Gibbs said that in one incident, he may have been wearing a hoodie.

Zone 2 commander Maj. Robert Browning said the APD wouldn't identify the apartment complext where the lastest incident occurred. He characterized the apartments as "safe complexes."

Browning did say that the apartments where police are investigating are in the Burford/Lenox Road, Piedmont and Lindbergh and Peachtree-Peachtree Park areas. One of the incidents last January occurred in Peachtree Park, he confirmed.
