Update: Wells Fargo Bank Robbery Suspect Identified

Red dye given by teller along with stolen money helps police make quick arrest

A man who robbed a Buckhead bank Tuesday afternoon was arrested a few blocks away by Zone 2 police officers, Atlanta police said.

Police Wednesday identified the alleged robber as Michael Brown, a white male. APD spokesperson Kim Jones said the teller to whom the suspect gave a hold-up note made a positive identification of Brown after he was arrested.

After taking an undisclosed amount of money from the Wells Fargo at the corner of Peachtree and Piedmont roads, the suspect was apprehended by officers in a patrol car, robbery investigator F. Turner said at the scene. The suspect was arrested at Piedmont and East Paces Ferry roads, a few blocks away from the bank. The suspect apparently had no weapon.

Jones said the officers who made the arrest received a radio description of the suspect and the direction he fled, and that they detained the suspect, who matched the description.

The teller had given the suspect a red dye pack along with the money, and when officers detained the suspect they "noticed that the suspect's hands were covered with red dye," Jones said. When the suspect went to get his ID from his back pocket, they noticed that his hands were covered with red dye, Jones said.

Recovered from the suspect was a hold-up note and $80 in various denominations, Jones said. The money was covered in red dye. The suspect showed police where he had dropped the rest of the money, she said.

Turner said the robber handed a note to the cashier, demanding money. When the cashier gave him an undisclosed amount, he fled, Turner said. Zone 2 police responded to a 911 call from the bank, Turner said.
