Deputy Chief Jones, APD, to Address Buckhead Business Association

Shawn L. Jones, appointed to the rank of Atlanta Police Department Deputy Chief in 2010, will speak to the BBA on August 16.

Shawn L. Jones, Deputy Chief, Atlanta Police Department, will speak at the Buckhead Business Association Weekly Breakfast on August 16, 2012 at the City Club of Buckhead.

Shawn L. Jones was appointed to the rank of Deputy Chief on January 7, 2010. He is responsible for managing the Atlanta Police Department's Support Services Division. Prior to his appointment, Deputy Chief Jones commanded the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (H-JAIA) police precinct from 2008 to 2010. During his tenure at the H-JAIA, it was ranked the busiest airport in the world in 2008 and 2009. Deputy Chief Jones managed 153 employees at the H-JAIA (e.g., the K-9 unit, the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, mobile and fixed post officers, police dispatchers and administrative support employees). Moreover, he prepared and managed a 16.9 million dollar budget consistent with the airport's strategic plan and business planning process.

In a post 9/11 environment at the H-JAIA, Deputy Chief Jones worked closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel (e.g., the Aviation Federal Security Director, the FBI, TSA, the Federal Air Marshalls, etc.). In addition, he actively communicated with airport police commanders in the US and abroad as a member of the Airport Law Enforcement Agencies Network (ALEAN).

Deputy Chief Jones was appointed to the rank of Police Major on May 22, 2007 and assigned to the Corporate Services Section. The Corporate Services Section is comprised of Property Control, Personnel Services, Finance, Grants Management, Fleet Services and Background and Recruitment. In 2007, Deputy Chief Jones oversaw the Atlanta Police Department's Background and Recruitment Unit's successful effort of hiring a record setting 251 polices recruit in a single year.

In February 2006, Deputy Chief Jones was assigned to command Personnel Services unit. In the role, he oversaw the successful implementation of automated timekeeping (KRONOS) and the City of Atlanta's random drug testing program. Additionally, he served as the police department's EEOC coordinator.

In March 2004, Deputy Chief Jones served as project manager for the department's Accreditation Unit. The police department was awarded accredited status by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in March 2005. Deputy Chief Jones was also responsible for overseeing the revision of the Atlanta Police Department's written directives.

While Deputy Chief Jones was assigned to the Field Operations Division (from June 2002 to March 2004) he worked as the assistant Zone One commander. There, he co-authored and oversaw the implementation of enforcement strategies that lead to a reduction in Part I crimes by 7% in Northwest Atlanta. The Part I crime reduction was the lowest in Zone One since 1996. 

Deputy Chief Jones was assigned to the Atlanta Police Academy from November 1997 to June 2002. There, he was responsible for training police recruits, field-training officers, certifying general and senior P.O.S.T instructors and certifying communications dispatchers. Moreover, Deputy Chief Jones oversaw the implementation of the department's first Citizen's Police Academy, the implementation of new basic mandate physical fitness standards, driver simulation training and the enhancement of reality-based training techniques. 

In 1986, Deputy Chief Jones began his law enforcement career with the Atlanta Police Department. After graduating from the Atlanta Police Academy, he was assigned to work at the Zone Four police precinct (Southwest Atlanta). Deputy Chief Jones was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1993 and he was assigned to the Zone Six police precinct (Northeast Atlanta). There he worked as a patrol supervisor. In June 1997, Deputy Chief Jones was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and assigned as the Day Watch patrol commander in Zone Two (North Atlanta). 

Prior to joining the APD in 1986, Deputy Chief Jones earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications at Morris Brown College.  In 2005 he graduated from Troy University with honors (Sigma Beta Delta) earning a Master of Public Administration.
