iPhone Scam Leads to Shooting in Historic Fourth Ward Skate Park

Victim turned the tables on would-be robber and held him at bay until police arrived.

Atlanta police arrested a man in Historic Fourth Ward Skate Park Thursday night after he attempted to rob another man responding to a bogus ad on Craigslist.

Michael Lee Willis Jr., 18, was arrested and charged with armed robbery in the incident, which occurred after 7 p.m. He remains in jail.

Police gave the following account:

The victim, 33, responded to a Craigslist post about an iPhone 5 for sale.

Both men agreed to meet at the park off 650 Willoughby Way NE.

At the meeting, Willis pulled out a .380-caliber pistol and ordered the victim to give up his mobile phone and cash.

The victim was forced back into his own car, where he happened to have a .45-caliber gun.

The victim fired twice in Willis' direction, ordering his would-be assailant to the ground and holding him at gunpoint until police arrived.

Awesome! Finally someone takes down one of these thugs. Also, don't meet someone to buy electronics off Craigslist unless you are meeting at a police station.

Surprise! The individual he tried to scam was an ex-police officer! Please pass the yellow mustard!

It's is a great example of a person getting what he deserves but I think that we are missing the greater point here. I am not shocked at te actions of this 18 year old kid, it seems to be a right of passage for the Atlanta youth to commit crimes like this at the expense of working class adults. It is laughingly coincidental that the victim is a former cop and had his own weapon, but the majority of people do not carry weapons nor would have been so fortunate as to walk away unscathed. Just less that 2 week ago, a car full of young men and teenagers had a minor car accident directly in front of my home off Clifton Rd, crashing into a neighbors fence in a stolen car. Two immediately jumped from the car and ran from the scene, laughing as they ran away but were apprehended soon after. These young men are roaming our neighborhoods, boring and broke, and are finding ways not to earn money honestly, but decide to take from those that do. It's is beyond sad and pathetic, its problematic and accepted as status quo ...
