Officials: Agitated Crowd, Motorcycle Led to World Congress Stampede

As many as ten people suffered injuries that sent them to the hospital in the aftermath of the stampede.

Authorities have discovered the cause of the stampede at the Georgia World Congress center during a car and bike show on Sunday evening.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the rush for the exits was caused by people misinterpreting a backfiring motorcycle for gunfire. In addition, Georgia World Congress Center General Manager Mark Zimmerman told the station that a fight had broken out on the exhibit floor.

The incident happened at approximately 8 p.m. during the closing hours of V103's 11th Annual Car and Bike Show.

Witnesses to the scene stated the crowd was somewhat anxious to watch a musical performance by rapper T.I., which was slated to begin shortly before the stampede occurred.

Patch reported on Monday that ten people had been taken to the hospital due to injuries suffered during the stampede.
