Buckhead Guidebooks Cause Bomb Scare

A man left a suspicious package in the Wells Fargo branch on the 4400 block of Roswell Road just after 11 a.m., and authorities closed Roswell and West Wieuca roads until the package was investigated.

A set of Buckhead Guidebooks placed near a Buckhead bank on Wednesday caused a bomb scare and shut down Roswell and West Wieuca roads for a few hours while police investigated the suspicious package.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported that "a man left an unmarked box inside the Wells Fargo branch in the 4400 block of Roswell Road near West Wieuca Road just after 11 a.m."

Atlanta Police Public Affairs Officer Kim Jones informed Buckhead Patch that the incident is now clear and there was never any danger.

"SWAT removed the package from the bank and used a disrupter on it to render it safe," said Jones.

The suspicious package turned out to be a set of the shiny 2013 Buckhead Guidebooks, which are produced and distributed every year by the Buckhead Coalition.

Buckhead Coalition Founder and former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell sent out a statement about the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

The statement read:

"PubMan, Inc., the independent distributor of our Buckhead Guidebook, has reported to us the apparent poor judgement exercised by its delivery person in leaving a sealed unmarked box of our Guidebooks in a Member's bank–Wells Fargo, on Roswell Road around Wieuca– which we understand has now been detonated after the area was barricaded.

"We regret the inconvenience caused individuals and businesses in the area, and compliment those in charge of involving appropriate law enforcement management of the situation. Although it was treated seriously at the time, we admit in hindsight we're pleased some humorist called us praising the "wide-spread" distribution now offered, and the call from the new publisher who immediately asked to handle our needs for next year's edition."

A number of community members were concerned because it has just been two days after twin terrorist bombings killed three and injured scores of others at the Boston Marathon on April 15.
