Toy Hand Grenade at E. Rivers Causes Bomb Scare

Atlanta police, fire department and Homeland Security respond

A hand grenade found atThursday morning turned out to be a toy, Atlanta police spokesperson Kim Jones said at the scene.

"It looked like a hand grenade," Jones said.

The APD bomb unit, the Atlanta Fire Department and Homeland Security police responded to a call made at 8:30 by the school's custodian, who found the device at the front door of the school and called 911,  Jones said.

"We have to take it seriously," Jones said. "It's better to be safe than sorry. This time it was a toy."

Peachtree Battle Avenue in front of the APS school was closed for a a little more than an hour, she said, while bomb experts checked out the device. Peachtree Battle Shopping Center,  across Peachtree Road from the school at 8 Peachtree Battle Ave., was unaffected.

The school is closed for the summer, she said. "No children were at the school at the time the call was made."
