APS Demographics Meeting Is Wednesday Night

Results of Buckhead Patch polls show community feelings

The A to gather community input on the demographics-capacity study that will be used to make decisions on the future of Buckhead public schools.

Buckhead Patch recently conducted two unscientific polls about subjects likely to receive attention at the public meeting, on reducing overcrowding at and construction of a new elementary school in Buckhead. The new elementary school is included in the continuation of the APS' 1-cent sales tax, recently approved by voters.

, 47 percent favored building a separate sixth grade academy at the present Sutton building and placing a seventh and eighth-grade school at the present North Atlanta High. A total of 30 percent favored two separate middle schools, one at Sutton and one at North Atlanta, while 21 percent wanted a new middle school at the North Atlanta building and the new elementary at Sutton.

, 33 percent favored placing the new elementary at Sutton and a new middle school at North Atlanta. A total of 30 percent favored buidling a new school that would be a charter or magnet school, while 14 percent wanted a new school with a separate district. The poll showed 21 percent favoring renovation and expansion of current elementaries without building a new school.
