Buckhead project remains on transit list

Roundtable executive committee narrows projects to $6.14 billion

A draft list of regional transportation projects includes improvements to the Roswell-Piedmont Road corridor through Buckhead to the Lindbergh MARTA station.

The executive committee of the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable on Monday reached unanimous agreement on the $6.14 billion draft list to be funded by a proposed 1-cent regional transit tax.

The Roswell-Piedmont Road corridor project is described on the roundtable's list as "bus rapid transit and roadway operations improvements."

Also on the list are Atlanta Beltline streetcar circulation and transit, which would include Buckhead, and Phase 1 of "fixed groundway transit" from the Arts Center MARTA Station in Midtown to Acworth. The first phase of the project, apparently involving buslike vehicles that run on light rail, would go to the Cumberland Mall area.

The list now must be approved by the full 21-member roundtable by Oct. 15 and submitted to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The next meeting of the full roundtable will be held on Friday, Sept.16.

The roundtable is holding a series of public hearings to gather public input into the transportation projects. The city of Atlanta public hearing will be Thursday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Atlanta City Council Chambers, 55 Trinity Ave.

A north Fulton County hearing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the North Fulton Service Center, 7741 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

The regional election for voters to decide on the transit tax is scheduled for July 2012, but a proposal before the Legislature now meeting in special session would move the vote to the November 2012 general election.
