Buckhead Projects Included in GDOT Official's 'Unconstrained' List

Atlanta Regional Roundtable to compile final list for voters

A Georgia Department of Transportation official included a number of Buckhead projects on his list of "unconstrained' work submitted to the Atlanta Regional Roundtable Wednesday.

The Roundtable will now further winnow down the list from the around 445 projects submitted by GDOT planning director Todd Long. The final list of projects will be submitted to voters who will decide on a 1-cent transit sales tax in a July 2012 referendum.

Projects selected by Long, which far outstrip the amount of money expected to be raised if the tax is approved, include improvements along the Roswell Road/Piedmont Road corridor from the Atlanta city limits to the Lindbergh MARTA station.

Other Buckhead projects are multimodal and intersection improvements at Cheshire Bridge Road and Lindbergh Drive; corridor improvements to Peachtree-Dunwoody Road from the city limits to Wieuca Road; and corridor improvements on West Paces Ferry Road from Paces Ferry Road to Peachtree Road. Along with traffic signal improvements on Northside Drive and Peachtree Road, the list ncludes an Atlanta Beltline streetcar circular and trail from South Buckhead to Midtown.

The "unconstrained" list of $22.9 billion worth of transportation priorities were identified by local governments, transit agencies and other organizations throughout the 10-county Atlanta region, with additional input from GDOT, according to a news release.

Under the Transportation Investment Act, the roundtable of local officials, which included Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, will narrow the list of projects down to a financially constrained list that can be built with the revenue generated by the sales tax, estimated to generate some $8 billion.
