Is Buckhead Big Enough to Be a County?

Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods Chairman Jim King is floating the idea of splitting Buckhead off into its own county. He said he wants to "put it out there, let it be vetted."

We spotted this video on the Reporter Newspaper website, which reports that Jim King, the chairman of the Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods, has proposed that the area split off to form its own county.

"It's not an anti-Atlanta plan," King told fellow board Council of Neighborhood members earlier this month. "I'd say it's a pro-Atlanta plan, a pro-Buckhead plan."

In the video, King cites the recent fracas at North Atlanta High School, where many parents remain upset about the removal of interim principal Mark MyGrant and his leadership team. More than 450 people have signed an online petition to protest the changes at the school.

King said the tension between the community and school board is just the latest example of why Buckhead may be better off creating its own county. Splitting off would allow the area to create its own school system, he said. And the Buckhead area could still remain within the Atlanta city limits.
