McDaniel Won't Comment on NAPPS Leader's Affidavit

New school board chairman in AJC interview says progress will continue

New Atlanta School Board Chairman Reuben McDaniel declined to comment upon an affidavit filed with the board by North Atlanta Parents for Public Schools leader Cynthia Briscoe Brown.

McDaniel, in a Q and A with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, declined to comment on the affidavit, in which NAPPS co-president Brown says that School Superintendent Erroll Davis asked McDaniel to run for the chairman's post because of problems Davis had with former chairperson Brenda Muhammad. In the affidavit, Brown says that Davis denied talking with McDaniel.

The affidavit was presented last week to the school board, which sent the affidavit to the APS' ethics commission.

Amy Shea, co-president of the PTSA, last week called upon McDaniel to comment upon the affidavit report.

On Friday, Buckhead Patch called Davis' office seeking comment about the affidavit, and a Davis aide tranferred the call to APS spokesman Keith Bromery. Bromery said that Davis had no comment on the matter and referred to the ethics commission investigation.

McDaniel, in refusing to comment in the AJC Q and A, also referred to the ethics commission's investigation of the matter.

The election of McDaniel raised concerns that it indicated new divisions such as those that led to the APS being placed on accreditation probation last year, but McDaniel told the AJC that the board's progress will continue.
