Rep. Lewis to Speak at Galloway

Congressman, civil rights leader to talk on theme of community

U.S. Rep. John Lewis will appear at the on Monday, participating in a conversation with students, faculty, parents and alumni.

Lewis will discuss one of the school's founding pillars, community and the role it has played in his life and work, according to a school news release. He will also speak about social justice and his role in the Civil Rights Movement.

The invitation-only event is closed to the public. Lewis will appear at 10 a.m. at the school's gymnasium as part of Galloway's School Speaker Series.

During the Civil Rights era, Lewis was among the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s top lieutenants and helped form the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. In 1986, after serving on the Atlanta City Council, he was elected to Congress from Atlanta's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Buckhead.

In February, Lewis was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award recognizing exceptional meritorious service.
