Atlanta Public Schools, Buckhead Private Schools Closed Tuesday

Big-screen viewing of BCS champsionship game for Monday night also canceled

All APS schools and offices will be closed for the second straight day Tuesday "due to adverse road and travel conditions resulting from the weekend snow and ice storms," according to an APS announcement Monday afternoon.

All before- and after-school, extracurricular and sports activities are also canceled, according to director of media relations Keith Bromery.

He said the decision was based on "continuing assessments of existing and predicted weather and road conditions."

A decision on whether the schools will be open Wednesday will be made sometime Tuesday or Wednesday morning. The APS Web site www.atlantapublicschools.us will be updated with closure information, he said.

The Atlanta City Council Utilties Committee meeting scheduled for 10 a.m.Tuesday has been postponed until Thursday. The time and place is to be announced. The committee is to consider the issue of street renamings in Atlanta.

The big-screen showing of the BCS championship game between Auburn and Oregon scheduled for tonight at the Buckhead Theatre has been canceled because of the icy weather. The event was sponsored by 790 the Zone radio of Buckhead.

MARTA canceled bus service Monday, based on a thorough assessment of road conditions,  according to a release from spokesperson Cara Hodgson.

Bus service will be temporarily suspended for Tuesday until conditions improve enough to allow vehicles back onto the streets, the release said. MARTA will notify the public as soon as bus service can be resumed.       

Rail service is operating a regular schedule; however, customers should expect delays.

MARTA headquarters is closed.  Customer information will be posted on www.itsmarta.com and provided on a recorded message at 404-848-5000.  MARTA Mobility customers can call 404-848-4212.

Atlanta Public Schools were closed Monday due to the forecast for snowy, icy conditions. The Atlanta Board of Education meeting scheduled for Monday afternoon has been canceled..    

The Atlanta Police Department released a link to download for filing auto accidents with no injuries. Those involved with such accidents can fill out the form. The link is www.dds.ga.gov/docs/forms/accident.pdf.

Police spokesman Sgt. Curtis Davenport said police would be responding to accidents with injuries and/or entrapment.

Davenport said conditions are very hazardous and drivers should stay off the roads.
