Buckhead Schools Look to Finish Spring Season Strong

With state playoffs looming, the intensity rises on the field and tennis court

As the regular season draws to a close for spring sports, Buckhead schools are gearing up for their annual playoff runs with hopes of bringing a state championship to their respective venues.

Baseball

On the diamond, closed out the week with a 10-6 win over Decatur on Saturday. The game was originally set for Friday, but heavy rains and lightening forced the umpires to suspend play in the fourth inning.

Lovett stands at 14-7 and 9-2 in Region 6-AA. This week, teams will compete in the region scramble. The top four schools with the best overall and region records will advance to the state playoffs. Lovett plays host to Blessed Trinity on Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. The remaining opponents and times for the week have yet to be announced.

head coach Jim Jefferson made history last week after earning the 400th victory of his illustrious career on Monday, April 11 following a 9-0 win over Therrell. His Wildcats currently stand at 14-5 and 8-2 in 6-AA.

The Wildcats will face Maynard Jackson High School on Monday in the region scramble. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.

It’s been a rough year for . The Warriors are 6-11 and 3-5 in 5-AAA competition.

North Atlanta closes out the season at Columbia Monday and at Grady Tuesday before returning home for the finale on against Cedar Grove on April 20.

Things have also been hard over at . The Knights are 4-10 and 1-7 in Region 5-A. This week’s games include at King’s Ridge Christian, Wednesday and at Mount Pisgah Christian, Saturday, April 23.   

Tennis

In tennis, the state playoffs begin this week. Among the teams vying for a state championship are the girls and boys from Westminster, Pace and Lovett.  

Soccer

On the soccer field, Westminster’s boys are No. 2 in the Class AA polls at 14-2. The Wildcats host Greater Atlanta Christian and Collins Hill on Tuesday and Wednesday to close out the season. Westminster’s girls stand at 8-6.

Just like at Westminster, Pace Academy’s boys have are state-ranked with a strong record in comparison to the girls. The Knights are No. 2 in Class A and an 11-2 record. Their female counterparts are 8-6.

Over at North Atlanta, the boys have held their own this season and showcase a 12-6 mark, while going 5-3 in 5-AAA.  The girls; however, are 4-5.

The girls have played well in 2011, going 5-2 with Friday’s game vs. Pace being washed out. However, the boys haven’t had such luck and are 2-10.

Lacrosse

Westminster’s girls’ lacrosse team suffered the first loss of their season on Saturday, falling 13-9 to Milton in the Legacy Cup. However, the now 15-1 are still the team to beat and look poised to go back-to-back as state champions.

Lovett’s boys are on a three-game winning streak and currently stand at 10-3. The Lions have four games remaining on the schedule over the next two weeks. Home versus Whitefield Academy and McIntosh Tuesday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 20. They follow that up with road games at Lassiter and Milton on Saturday, April 23 and Wednesday, April 27.

Over at Pace, Senior Night festivities for the boys and girls lacrosse teams take place on Thursday, April 21 vs. Northgate High School.
