Davis' School Plan Draws Buckhead Support

NAPPS co-president approves of superintendent's recommendations

APS Superintendent Errroll B. Davis Jr. is likely to receive a positive reception Tuesday night when he holds a public meeting on

The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at .

Davis calls for elementary school districts to remain unchanged. Buckhead neighborhoods expressed strong opposition to the extensive redistricting proposed by APS demographers late last year and earlier this year. Davis' plan has been presented to the Atlanta school board, which will make a final decision in April.

“I think as a cluster we are very pleased generally,” Cynthia Briscoe Brown, co-president of the North Atlanta Parents for Public Schools, said about Davis' recomendatioins, released March 4. “Our concerns were heard and addressed. I think all four of the guiding prinicples that PTA leaders put together and NAPPS published were all honored.

“While there some issues remaining to be resolved another day, I think we have every thing we need right now," she said.

The configuration of Buckhead’s middle schools remains unresolved, with two  middle schools or a separate sixth grade academy the choices. Each option has community support.

Under Davis’ recommendations, the middle school configuration won’t take effect for several years. With the opening of the new North Atlanta High in autumn 2013, construction is to begin that year on a new School. E. Rivers students are to use the current site for 18 months, with all middle school students placed at the current North Atlanta site during that time.

“After we finish the rebuilding and renovation at E. Rivers, then the current Sutton may be used as a sixth grade academy,” Brown said. “That’s at least three years down the road. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it it. It’ll be easier to deal with that question after we’ve movd into new high school campus.”

Davis in his plan called for the situation at and elementaries to be monitored. “Neither Garden Hills or Brandon have significant problems right now,” Brown said.

The superintendent is likely to face a more difficult environment in other meetings around the city. His recommendations call for 13 schools to close, drawing opposition.
