Galloway Seniors Plan Benefit Concert at Buckhead Theatre

Event Saturday night benefits Atlanta-based CARE

Two Galloway seniors developed a novel class project: putting on a concert to benefit Atlanta-based CARE.

Galloway’s “Concert for CARE,” featuring five bands whose members are Galloway students, alumni, faculty and parents, begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Buckhead Theatre.

The concert was conceived by Galloway seniors Dakota Foard and Laura Sack, who began planning for it in the fall under the direction of teacher Lexi Fields, who taught them economics this year.

Playing a variety of music from bluegrass to rock, the bands that will perform are Stomp Down Rider, featuring Galloway history teacher Dr. Allen Barksdale; the Jeff Jones Band, headed by a Galloway parent; Moondogs, with Galloway senior Sam Freeman and Galloway alumnus Austin Adkins ’10; Jeffers Morning with Galloway alumnus Jake Goodman ’10; and Sol, another local high school band, according to the Galloway Web site. Tickets are $15, with proceeds benefiting CARE, the Atlanta-based anti-poverty agency.

Foard said that she and Sack  chose CARE because  it is based in Atlanta and is involved with causes in which they are interested. “The fact that CARE works all over the world with so many causes we supported was appealing,” she said.

The project taught them what’s involved in operating a small business, including managing a budget, hiring vendors, seeking volunteers and marketing the event through conventional and social media.

Galloway seniors take off the final three weeks of school to work on their class projects, and Foard said she and Sack have been taking care of the final stages of the event.

“We’re still pretty busy getting everything ready,” she said. Galloway's graduation will be May 26.
