High School Construction Contract Approved

School board OKs $70.9 million deal for new North Atlanta High

The Atlanta Board of Education Tuesday approved a $70.9 million contract for construction of the new complex on Northside Parkway.

Overshadowed by the dramatic school redistricting vote, the board approved the contract with R.J. Griffin and Co., an action that will allow the work to remain on schedule for the new school's opening in fall 2013.

"I'm very pleased with that," said Cynthia Briscoe Brown, co-president of the North Atlanta Parents for Public Schools. "Now we can start concentrating on this."

Briscoe said "we have to keep it on target" for the fall 2013 opening, because a series of moves outlined in APS Superintendent Erroll B. Davis Jr.'s recommendations also approved by the board depend on the new high school's completion.

The proposal was prepared by Alvah Hardy II, the APS executive director of facilities services and approved by Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Operations Larry L. Hoskins. Chief Financial Officer Chuck Burbridge signed off on the appropriations under the proposal, submitted by Davis.

In fall 2013, students are to shift to the current North Atlanta site, and students will use the current Sutton site for 18 months while a new E. Rivers building is constructed.

Site preparation work has begun on the new North Atlanta site, but with the approval of the contract, construction will move into a new stage.
