Lovett Valedictorian, Salutatorian Ivy League Bound

The Lovett School recognizes its class of 2012 valedictorian and salutatorian.

Zainub Dhanani, valedictorian:

If ever one was looking for the "total package," this young scholar more than fits the bill. Zainub maintains a low-key, reserved, mild-mannered confidence. She is respectful and engaging with a great deal of moral fortitude; and yet, she is always striving to be better. Zainub has an excellent work ethic and impeccable organizational skills. She is consistently prepared and focused in class, setting an example for her peers and helping to establish a productive tone during each and every lesson.

Zainub is heavily committed to community service. For example, she was founder and co-president of the World Relief Club and Jamie Allen Food Distribution here at Lovett. She has also worked with a Somalian Refugee Help Group and the Emory Johns Creek Hospital Summer VolunTEEN Program. In addition, Zainub's consciousness and sensitivity drives her passionate commitment to Lovett's sustainability efforts, as well. She was co-president of the Upper School Green Team and was involved in four Green Team committees: the Materials Committee, the Procurement Committee, the Publicity Committee, and the Transportation Committee. In addition, with very little instruction, Zainub was able to purchase all the materials and assemble a Living Machine (which cleans water using natural, organic processes) in one of Lovett's science laboratories last year. When asked how she was able to build a working model with so little guidance, Zainub simply said, "I just figured it out."

Academically, Zainub is the best that Lovett has to offer from the class of 2012. But more importantly, her strengths revolve around her passion and desire to go beyond what is required. Zainub will attend Harvard in the fall.

Claire Beskin, salutatorian:

Claire loves to learn in the same way that most of us breathe—it’s just her natural milieu. She is collaborative, genuine in her desire to find out what others think, and naturally omnivorous in her search for knowledge. When you ask her what subjects she enjoys the most, she’s almost surprised at the question. The answer, of course, is that she loves them all.

It is exceedingly rare to come across a student as deeply engaged in her education as Claire. Even rarer, perhaps, is one who combines such intellectual involvement with such active outreach to others in her school and community. Claire was involved in Habitat for Humanity, the Green Team (Lovett’s sustainability group), Student Government (as the special events coordinator), Women’s Chorus, cheerleading, golf, and served on the Fulton County Youth Commission, which works on legislative efforts and community outreach. (She was one of twenty students asked to be a youth ambassador for this commission). Claire has participated in three mission trips organized through her church, First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. In addition, for the past three summers, Claire has traveled to China, and two of the trips were fully funded scholarships. Claire served as president of Lovett’s Asian Culture Club and won first place in level IV at a speech contest sponsored by Georgia Chinese Educators earlier this year.
Claire has been accepted at Dartmouth and will start studying there this fall.
