Morris Brandon Team Places Third in Reading Bowl Event

Garden Hills team also advances to regional competition

A Morris Brandon Elementary team placed third in regional competion in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, according to an APS news release.

The team, led by Brandon's media specialist, Lindsay Waddell, advanced to the regional level Feb. 4 as the highest scoring team at the elementary district level, along with Garden Hills Elementary.

Brandon tied for secon in the region, but lost in a sudden death round. Only first and second place finishered advance to the divisional playoffs. Divisional winners compete at the state finals in Athens, held every year during the Georgia Children’s Literacy Conference.

At this year’s Bowl, 41 APS students represented teams from E. Rivers, Warren T. Jackson, Morris Brandon, Centennial Place, Garden Hills, Parkside, Toomer, Beecher Hills and Drew Charter elementary schools, Sutton Middle School, the New Schools at Carver and Douglass high schools.

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is a competition that allows fourth through 12th grade students across Georgia to test their knowledge of  literature based on books that have been nominated for the Georgia Children’s Book Award and the Georgia Peach Teen Book Award. Helen Ruffin, a former media specialist in DeKalb County, created the competition several years ago to encourage students to read.
